Field visit in Córdoba, Spain: Linking Soil Management to Biodiversity

The Córdoba field visit took place at the agroecological garden managed by Asociación Siempreviva within the Cordel de Écija socio-ecological garden area. The site provided a practical setting to connect soil health with community gardening, organic-matter management, biodiversity and local environmental education. ECHO SOIL and Soil-X-Change were presented as complementary initiatives: ECHO supports participatory observation of soil, while Soil-X-Change facilitates the exchange of practical knowledge on sustainable soil and farm management.

The visit included a guided walk through the garden plots and an exchange with representatives of Asociación Siempreviva. The discussion linked the local management of the site with soil-health concepts and with the practical resources available through ECHO SOIL and Soil-X-Change.

Visible examples included the use of decomposing organic material and the presence of earthworms, which supported discussion on biological activity, nutrient cycling and soil structure. The group also reviewed the diversity of cultivated, aromatic and flowering plants and the association’s “Oasis de Mariposas”, connecting soil management with pollinator habitat and wider biodiversity.

The visit was documented through photographs of the plots, the participants, the butterfly-oasis information panel, the organic material and the location of the garden.

The main practices observed were community-scale agroecological cultivation, reuse of organic residues through composting, maintenance of biologically active organic material, diversified plantings and the creation of habitat for pollinators. These examples show that soil-health communication can be integrated with biodiversity and environmental-education activities rather than treated as an isolated technical topic.

The field-based format encouraged an open exchange between Asociación Siempreviva and AMBIENTA. Appreciation is extended to the association for receiving the visit, presenting its work and providing access to the garden. The photographs reflect the collaborative and practical character of the activity.

 

Conclusions:

The visit connected soil health with practices already implemented in a community agroecological setting.

Composting and the presence of earthworms provided a direct example of organic-matter decomposition and biological soil activity.

Plant diversity and pollinator-support measures broadened the discussion from soil properties to agroecosystem health.

The exchange created a basis for future collaboration and for sharing the association’s experience through Soil-X-Change.
